Rangers have asked Philippe Clement to “deliver” the Scottish Cup and “further” the Ibrox outfit’s European progress this season to help keep his job, Alasdair Lamont has said.
The Belgian’s role at Rangers has been under severe scrutiny since the start of the season with fans being won over somewhat by finishing in the top eight of the Europa League league phase.
Writing for the BBC Sport website (5 February), BBC Scotland reporter Lamont shared what the Belgian needs to do to be able to continue his rebuild in Glasgow.
“Nonetheless, Patrick Stewart did say there would be ‘one or two’ arrivals in January and he was true to his word,” he wrote.
“With the league title out of reach, the board have taken the pragmatic approach of asking Clement to deliver the Scottish Cup and further European progress with the tools he already had.
“If the Belgian can do both of those then he should keep his job and be allowed to continue the rebuild of the squad along with Nils Koppen, with the pre-contract agreement for Lyall Cameron’s summer arrival from Dundee the first move in that regard.”
Philippe Clement has a lot to live up to at Rangers
Even though there have been multiple times in the 2024/25 season when fans have called for the head of Clement due to the poor form of Rangers, it seems the Belgian has lived to fight another day.
Now that the Scottish Premiership is a write-off with Celtic now 10 points ahead of them in the league, and owning a game in hand, Rangers are likely to turn all their attention to the Europa League and the Scottish Cup.
Rafael Fernandes was the only new face added to the Gers’ ranks in the winter window and while it’s good news that another centre-back was brought in, it feels like Clinton Nsiala has stepped up and shown he can be a huge asset at centre-back.
In reality, Rangers needed one or two guaranteed starters to add to their squad in order to keep competitive across the competitions they’re in at the moment but now the window is shut, it seems that Clement is going to have to work his magic with what he’s got.
