Alex Mellor, the outstanding back-rower for the Castleford Tigers, will be included in their match against St Helens in round two, according to head coach Danny McGuire.

The forward, who was elected vice-captain before the new season began, has been sidelined by injury for much of the team’s preseason and their first loss to Hull KR.

Prior to his team’s matchup with the Saints this weekend—who enter the match after thrashing Salford 82-0 in round one—McGuire assured the media that Mellor will return to the back row.

He remarked, “Good, it’s really big for us.” “He takes excellent care of himself, is a competent professional, and returned earlier than anticipated. I believe he will be a huge help to us this weekend.”

Josh Hodson would probably be left out of the match-day squad due to Mellor’s comeback, but McGuire was full of praise for the center after he played well in the back row against Hull KR.

There (in the back row), Josh Hodson has performed well. He isn’t too comfortable with the role, but he has performed well there, so I do think he has a future there.

But Alex is one of our leaders and our vice-captain, and his return will be a big addition for us,” he continued.

Since joining the Tigers from Leeds Rhinos in 2022, Mellor has made 63 appearances and scored 11 tries, solidifying his position as a prominent member of the pack.

Although Mellor is already a confirmed addition to the starting lineup, McGuire stated that he believes the players that played against Hull KR the previous time out should be retained.
