Josh Coburn, a striker for Middlesbrough, is having a great season on loan at Millwall, and the Lions’ manager Alex Neil has made no secret of his intention to retain the 22-year-old long-term.

The forward is now scheduled to return to Boro at the end of the season, although he is at The Den for the season. In recent weeks, Michael Carrick has discussed the player’s future and subtly suggested that he would play in the North East next season.

Coburn has four Championship goals this season in a campaign that has been stop-start due to injuries. He spent a portion of the international break back home in the north. Two of those goals won victories against Watford and Derby County in the last five league games.

Coburn stated in a recent interview with The South London Press Football Pod: “I’ve had a great time down here. In my opinion, it’s important to focus on this season and the approaching summer before having discussions. I have no control over many things; Boro and their desires are ultimately in charge. I’ve enjoyed playing for this club and my time down here, that’s all I have to say.

Boro, in my opinion, has done a pretty excellent job of saying to focus on this season, get down here, and see where it leads. I don’t want any distractions on the season, I know there’s speculation but I just need to concentrate on game by game and wait until the summer comes.

The manager has been excellent with me since I started, and I’ve enjoyed working with him. I was hurt when I first started, and he’s been great at taking me out occasionally and being very careful with my injury; the last thing he wants is for me to get hurt again. Neil recently acknowledged that the team would “like to try and keep Josh here beyond where we’re at now.” The head coach called that transfer a “important” move, and he described Coburn as the kind of player who fits his style of play.
