Former West Virginia Girls’ Basketball Player of the Year Marley Washenitz Enters Transfer Portal

Marley Washenitz, the 2022 West Virginia Girls’ Basketball Player of the Year and former standout at Fairmont Senior High School, has entered the NCAA transfer portal after two seasons with the Pitt Panthers.

Background & High School Success
Washenitz was one of the most highly touted prospects in West Virginia high school basketball history. A 5’11” guard, she led Fairmont Senior to back-to-back Class AAA state championships in 2021 and 2022 while earning Gatorade West Virginia Player of the Year honors as a senior. She finished her high school career with over 1,500 points and was ranked as a four-star recruit by ESPN.

College Career at Pitt
Washenitz committed to Pitt as part of head coach Lance White’s 2022 recruiting class. As a freshman, she appeared in 29 games, averaging 2.7 points and 1.4 rebounds per game. However, her playing time decreased in her sophomore season under new head coach Tory Verdi, leading to her decision to enter the transfer portal.

What’s Next?
With three years of eligibility remaining, Washenitz will look for a program where she can play a larger role. Given her scoring ability, athleticism, and championship pedigree, she could be an attractive addition for mid-major or high-major programs seeking backcourt depth.

West Virginia fans will be watching closely to see if the former state standout lands with a new team where she can reignite her promising career.
