Quincy Wilson Returns Home: WVU Legend Joins Alma Mater’s Coaching Staff

West Virginia native and Mountaineer football legend Quincy Wilson is coming home. The former star running back, who left an indelible mark on West Virginia University (WVU) football, is set to join the coaching staff at his alma mater, bringing his passion, experience, and deep-rooted love for the program back to Morgantown.

A West Virginia Icon
Born and raised in Weirton, West Virginia, Wilson grew up dreaming of wearing the Old Gold and Blue. His standout career at Weir High School made him one of the state’s most coveted recruits, and he didn’t disappoint when he arrived at WVU. From 2000 to 2003, Wilson became a fan favorite, known for his bruising running style, breakaway speed, and clutch performances.

One of his most iconic moments came in 2003 against then-No. 3 Miami, when he bulldozed through multiple Hurricanes defenders on a 12-yard touchdown run—a play immortalized in WVU lore. His contributions helped lay the foundation for some of the program’s most successful seasons under former head coach Rich Rodriguez.

From the Field to the Sideline
After his college career, Wilson spent time in the NFL with the Atlanta Falcons and later played in the Canadian Football League (CFL) and Arena Football League (AFL). But no matter where his playing career took him, Wilson’s heart remained in West Virginia.

Now, he’s returning to WVU in a coaching role, eager to mentor the next generation of Mountaineers. While his exact position hasn’t been officially announced, his presence on staff is expected to energize the running backs room and strengthen WVU’s recruiting ties within the state.

A Homecoming with Purpose
For Wilson, this opportunity is about more than football—it’s about giving back to the program and state that shaped him.

“West Virginia is home. This program means everything to me, and I’m honored to help guide these young men both on and off the field,” Wilson said. “I know what it means to wear that Flying WV, and I want to make sure every player in that locker room understands the legacy they’re representing.”

Head coach Neal Brown, who has emphasized the importance of reconnecting with WVU’s traditions, sees Wilson’s hiring as a major win.

“Quincy embodies what it means to be a Mountaineer—tough, passionate, and loyal,” Brown said. “Having someone with his experience and love for WVU is invaluable. Our players are going to benefit greatly from his leadership.”

A New Chapter for a Mountaineer Legend
As Wilson transitions from player to coach, his return has already ignited excitement among fans who remember his glory days. Now, he’ll have the chance to help write new chapters in WVU football history—this time from the sidelines.

For Quincy Wilson, the journey has come full circle. And for Mountaineer Nation, one of their favorite sons is back where he belongs.

Welcome home, Quincy.
