The messaging, fairly, from Toronto FC in recent weeks has been that as long as they are picking up points and not losing games, then they are moving in the right direction, even if points are dropped at times. That isn’t always what fans — who have been patiently waiting for the club to turn a page after missing the playoffs five years in a row — necessarily want to hear. But many seemed to be willing to trust the process a bit longer as the club hovers around MLS’ Eastern Conference playoff spots to begin 2026.

Getting back to their golden years at the end of the 2010s has been, and will be, no small task for Toronto FC, who threw away a lot of that goodwill on Tuesday night with a second half collapse to Atletico Ottawa in the first round of the Canadian Championship. The Reds were eliminated early, once again, from a competition they stated in the days leading up as a priority for TFC to start winning again.
As the players went over to the fans after Tuesday’s match they were met with boos, followed by a tense exchange where they listened to the fans speak their mind. Club captain Jonathan Osorio apologized for what they watched unfold, and did so again when he met the media shortly after.
“I feel disappointment, a bit of embarrassment. It’s a tough one,” he told reporters before giving credit to Ottawa. “I just want to say first and foremost that on behalf of the team to the fans, we are very sorry. It was not a result or a performance worthy of this club. We know that.”
