In a stunning turn of events, Denmark midfielder **Morten Hjulmand** has announced he will leave professional football to pursue handball.
The 27-year-old Atlético Madrid and Denmark international made the surprise decision after years at the top level of European football. Known for his leadership, stamina and tactical intelligence at Sporting CP, Lecce and now Atlético, Hjulmand says the move is about “a new challenge and returning to my roots.”
Growing up in Kastrup, Hjulmand played both football and handball as a kid before choosing football. Now, he wants to represent Denmark in a different sport. “Handball has always been in my blood. It’s fast, physical, and very Danish. I’m ready to learn, compete, and give everything,” he said in a statement.
Experts are divided. Some call it a bold career reset, others doubt a footballer can adapt to handball’s speed and throwing technique. But Hjulmand’s athleticism, 1.85m frame and work ethic make the switch intriguing.
He will join a Danish handball club this fall and begin training immediately. Denmark’s handball team, already Olympic champions, could have a very unusual new recruit.
Whether it works or not, one thing is clear: Morten Hjulmand isn’t afraid to bet on himself again.
