On today’s date in 1974, Marquette legend and ABA star George Thompson’s NBA rights were acquired by the Milwaukee Bucks in a trade with the Boston Celtics, who had retained Thompson’s NBA rights after drafting him in 1969, for cash and future considerations. “George can play the strong, muscle type of basketball we need from a guard,” said Bucks Coach Larry Costello. Thompson was coming off two All-Star seasons with the ABA’s Memphis Tams and would play one season for the Bucks, averaging 10.7 points, 2.5 rebounds and 3.1 assists per game before retiring. Thompson would then become the radio voice for Marquette basketball, calling games for 27 years before becoming Vice President of Corporate Communications for Briggs & Stratton, retiring in 2007.
